Why Kona?

The Kona Coffee Belt is a narrow strip along the western coast of Hawaii's Big Island, stretching just 30 miles long and 2 miles wide. This micro-climate, with its volcanic soil, afternoon cloud cover, and mild nights, produces some of the most sought-after coffee on the planet. Less than 1% of the world's coffee comes from Kona.

Rooted in Holualoa

The story begins in 1911 when the family first started farming coffee on the slopes of Hualalai. By 1920, Hirosuke Mutsunobu opened a general store at the same location on Mamalahoa Highway. When he returned to Japan later that decade, his nephew Kakuro Komo took over, and the K. Komo Store was born.

Kakuro ran the store for over 30 years while raising his family on the second floor, serving the Holualoa community with groceries, produce, gasoline, hardware, and clothing alongside the coffee operation.

"The land gives you what you give it. We've always farmed with respect for the soil, the rain, and the mountain."

The K. Komo Store

After Kakuro's passing in 1950, son Kenneth Komo and wife Mutsumi carried the family business forward. The general store remained a cornerstone of the Holualoa community for decades. The original two-story building's top floor was eventually removed in 2010 due to termite damage, but the building still stands along the highway today.

In a world of mass-produced "Kona blends" containing as little as 10% Kona beans, Komo Estate Coffee remains proudly 100% Kona, 100% estate-grown, and 100% authentic.

Same Farm, Same Values

The Komo family still farms the same volcanic soil their ancestors first planted over a century ago. Every cherry is hand-picked at peak ripeness, sun-dried on traditional hoshidanas under the Kona sun, and roasted in small batches right on the property.

No middlemen. No blending. No shortcuts. Just pure, estate-grown Kona coffee the way it's been done for four generations.
